John, not long ago you mention you had a drone that was less than
250 grams. I can't convince myself to get one, although the idea
surfaces every couple of months.

(1) What brand/model do you have?

(2) Can you fly it almost anywhere? I keep reading that all you have to
do is not use it to peak in people's windows and stay more than 9 km
from an airport.

(3) How quickly does the novelty wear off?

I spent a day scouring the Internet, and I can't figure out if I
want one or not. You are the only one I know who has one.

A question about drones... music to my ears!

There really is no question that the best drone to start with is a DJI
Mavic Mini - at 249g it's classed as a Micro-RPA (Remote Piloted
Aircraft) and is exempt from every rule other than section 900.06 of the
CAR (Canadian Aviation Regulations) that reads:

900.06 No person shall operate a remotely piloted aircraft system in
such a reckless or negligent manner as to endanger or be likely to
endanger aviation safety or the safety of any person.

That's it! There are a few other rules but they're not significantly
prohibitive... You can legally fly almost anywhere including in the
city, over people, and yes even near airports.

A used Mavic Mini 2 is the perfect drone to start with. I have a Mini 3
Pro with a few extra features and better specs but the 2 is a super
capable device and available used for $400. I've been droning for around
4 years and I still really enjoy it.

Get one!

John
