Just got home from Costco. Ugh! First time there in 3 years.
It'll be another 3 years before I go again. Full of people, about 5-10%
unmasked with the "Just mention it" glare in their eyes. I never liked
Costco, but their prices are reasonable, and the quality of the products
generally is better . . . however the bother isn't worth it. I use them
online to get a few things, which justifies my membership. Their cash
registers crashed for about 30 minutes, creating big lineups with people
giving up and leaving half-full carts there and walking out. They got
them back up, and that lasted 15 minutes and down they went again for
another 5 minutes. Damn Russian hackers!

I guess this country mouse will stick to SuperStore and Sobeys from
now on . . .

For years a friend and I have split a membership, at the time we were
signing up she claimed we were sisters so I said not a word because
she is broad Newf and if I had opened my mouth even the slowest clerk
would have caught on :) However, we have decided to let it lapse this
year, we feel we are getting too old to handle the big warehouse and
lugging the stuff.

You fraudster! :-)

That too is a factor (the size of the place.) Not only is it a huge
warehouse, but everything they sell is super sized. When they first showed
up (Chain Lake?) we got a membership. I recall back then in the early
1990s that we were arriving at the checkout with huge carts of way too much
stuff. At the time there were 7 of us living in one house, and still too
much.

It’s not all bad, but they subconsciously get you to buy more than you
really need. I still don’t understand why they have a checker when you
leave. They glance at your cart and mark your receipt AFTER you paid for
everything. How could you shoplift or steal anything once you are past the
cashiers? Seems to me everything “behind” you is inside a steel fence that
goes to the roof. There might be dishonest cashiers who don’t ring in
stuff for friends and relatives, but I suspect that’s rare. Maybe they
hire the “greeters” (who don’t really look at your card) and the “good bye
ladies” as a make jobs deal to get tax breaks or grants.

Every time I go, I say to myself that I won’t go back. Every 3-4
years I do, and the cycle repeats! :-). I have a membership because the
coffee they sell in the British Columbia stores (roasted in Richmond) “Java
Club 100% Colombian Whole Bean Arabica Coffee, 2-pack” isn’t sold locally,
but you can mail order it. It’s the best I have found for espresso.
That’s the only “luxury” I have. Fresh espresso every morning. Two double
shots. Nothing wrong with me! :-)

I agree! We cancelled our membership a couple of years ago and don’t miss it at all… they have a few things I liked, men’s clothing and a few hardware items but the shopping experience was awful.
